The Flag of Georgia

The Georgian flag depicts a red rectangular cross against a white background with four smaller red crosses in the corners. The central cross represents the Lord Jesus Christ, while the other crosses symbolize the four Evangelists. This Christian symbol first appeared as a heraldic sign on the coat-of-arms of the crusader Godfrey of Bouillon in 1099, who was awarded the title of Defender of the Holy Sepulchre.
Since then this heraldic sign has symbolized the Holy Sepulchre, as well as Jerusalem. It is known under three names: the coat-of-arms of Godfrey of Bouillon, the coat-of-arms of Jerusalem and the Divine Omen.
The colour white in heraldry is a symbol of purity, innocence and wisdom while the red represents courage, bravery, justice and love.
This flag indicated the territory of Georgia on Angelino Dulcert's Portolan sea chart (1339), on the sea chart by Francesco and Domenico Pizigani (1367), as well as on the sea chart by Sideri (1565).
